Copyright gives the creators/owners of intellectual property the exclusive and legal right to copy, adapt, display, and perform a creative work. In Canada and the US, the general term of copyright protection is 70 years after the death of the author. Once copyright expires, works enter the public domain and can be legally used, modified, and/or referenced without permission or payment. 

In 2022, CBC released the documentary "The Pretendian", which focuses on individuals with disputed Indigenous heritage. In October 2023, CBC released an extensive investigation claiming that singer Buffy Sainte-Marie had faked her Indigenous ancestry.  According to the CBC's ombudsperson, "these types of investigative stories stir interesting ethical debates about how to weigh serving the public interest against fairness toward the individual at the heart of the story.".
